Overall Task of the Symposium

The task of the symposium is to generate collective thinking about specific policy recommendations within the two sociotechnical realms of “the social” (especially desired Results & Outcomes) and “the technical” (what are the measurements that can be used to generate a score for AIxAI quality assurance). Volunteers will gather and organize these thoughts, ideas, suggestions, questions, concerns, and brainstorms into a detailed report. The purpose of the report is to consolidate collective intelligence from the Symposium that will contribute to the design of policy recommendations for Congress to regulate AIxAI, based in community-led participatory action research.

Overall Mission

The mission of the symposium is to lay the foundation for diverse Deaf leadership in the design of legal regulations for Automated Interpreting by Artificial Intelligence (AIxAI) through transdisciplinary collaboration and participatory action research – that is, to engage, educate and empower participants to develop the vision and argument that diverse Deaf people have the best sense of

  1. what needs to be regulated at the federal level and
  2. how to regulate it.
There will be a pre-test on this video for participants wishing to earn CEUs. Please watch and feel free to share on social media using the hashtag #DeafSafeAI. Sociotechnical systems are a foundational concept for understanding the potential risks and benefits of AIxAI.

Designing The Best AIxAI System: Technological Quality for AIxAI

TECHNOLOGY TRACK 10am-4pm Saturday, April 20, with breaks for a total of 5 hours. Professional Studies.

The Technology Track will emphasize one half of the ‘equation’ of sociotechnical systems.

Understanding the capabilities and limitations of contemporary sign language recognition technology is essential to being able to effectively evaluate the risks and rewards of automated interpreting by artificial intelligence (AIxAI). Knowledge of the risks and rewards is critical for legislative regulation. Because the risks are great, federal regulation is required. Because the rewards are also great, deep dialogue is necessary to negotiate the right balance of consumer/citizen safety and entrepreneurial license.

Educational Objectives:

  1. Participants will be able to identify different technological aspects of AIxAI.
  2. Participants will be able to describe at least one example of how technology always involves the social.
  3. Participants will be able to prioritize the key technological features that they want from AIxAI technologies.
  4. Participants can critically assess the latest advancements in AI-assisted sign language interpreting technology.

CEU Disclaimer

Vancro Integrated Interpreting Services (VIIS) is an approved RID CMP sponsor for Continuing Education Activities. The Technology Track workshop is offered for .5 CEUs, and the Social Track is offered for .55 CEUs in the Professional Studies area at the “little to no” Content Knowledge level. Participants will receive a certificate of attendance. The target audience for this activity is: a mixed general and specialist audience of deaf and hearing people, including interpreters, engineers, advocates, legislators, and anyone who wants to help design AIxAI for the social good.

Cancellation and Refund Policy: No refunds for cancellations, with or without notice. In the highly unlikely event that we need to cancel; funds will be applied to the rescheduled date.

As always, VIIS is committed to offering educational opportunities free from discrimination and bias. For accommodations contact info@deaf-futures.com

How Humans Influence the Design of Technology: Social Aspects of AIxAI

SOCIAL TRACK 4-6pm Saturday, April 20 and 10am-2pm Sunday, with breaks for a total of 5.25 hours. Professional Studies.

The Social Track highlights the other half of the ‘equation’ of sociotechnical systems.

Findings of the qualitative #DeafSafeAI discourse analysis about AIxAI  yielded two, interrelated, critical social impact areas. In this track we set aside concerns about the “readiness” of general h/Hearing culture to truly embrace fairness and ethics to, instead, harness Deaf readiness and expertise in designing safety and equity into AIxAI.  By focusing on the critical social impact area of “results & outcomes,” participants begin to imagine measurable short-term results that have the best chance of leading to long-term sociocultural goals ( such as preservation of language and culture, broader acceptance of diverse modalities of communication, and embrace of plurilingual communication skills as essential to sustainable democracy) ). Clear descriptions of short-term quality measurements are necessary for federal regulation to have enforceability. Clear vision of what AIxAI interactions should ‘feel like’ and generate in material terms for participants sets the bar for ultimate outcomes. These outcomes become the social ‘pole’ of sociotechnical design with the capabilities and limitations of technology’ at the other end, and become the guiding light for when, where, how and whom is designated accountable in federal legislation regulating AIxAI.

Educational Objectives:

  1. Participants will be able to describe specific reasons that hearing people will benefit from including deaf people in the design of AIxAI.
  2. Participants can name at least two ways that “the social” influences technology and the measurable short-term results (design and implementation) of AIxAI.
  3. Participants can explain the relationship between short-term results and long-term outcomes of technology.
  4. Participants will be able to make at least one argument in support of federal legislation regulating AIxAI.
